Asthma Asthma is a respiratory illness that is characterized by adequate inspiration but faulty expiration. In otherwords, asthmatics can effectively breath in fresh air but have trouble expelling used air. In children it can be caused by sensitivities to food, in adults it is frequently caused by sensitivities to pollen. An asthma attach can be precipitated by an emotional crisis as well as by an allergen. Trans fats and asthma In a recent European study rates of asthma and allergies were highest in populations with the highest consumption of trans fats in processed foods. (Lancet, 6/12/99). To avoid trans fats in your food supply read labels - look for the words "partially hydrogenated oil". Some examples to "high trans" foods include Skippy Peanut Butter, Oreo Sandwich cookies, Tostitos 100% White Corn Chips, Arnold's 100% Whole Wheat Bread, Pasta Roni Shells and White Cheddar. Healthy alternatives are Smucker's Natural Creamy Peanut Butter, Guiltless Gourmet Tortilla Chips, Wonder Stoneground 100% Whole Wheat Bread, Kraft Deluxe Macaroni & Cheese Dinner. Cookies from a whole food supermarket. If you buy fat-free foods trans fat are automatically eliminated because there is no fat at all. Shop natural food supermarkets- Whole food product lines are trans-free. Other common allergens that may affect asthmatics include peanuts, shellfish, cow's milk, eggs, wheat, chicken eggs, soy, corn etc. Updated June 2000 Donna Tinnerello, MS, RD, CD/N is a registered dietitian, living in Manhattan, with more than 10 years experience in HIV and nutrition.
