Low Purine Diet For Treatment Of Gout

Purine from food accounts for only 15% o uric acid. 85% is formed from purine metabolism in the body independent of diet. Drugs treatment has largely replace diet for management of gout.

Foods very high in purine.(AVOID) Anchovies, Bouillon, Brains, Broth, Consommé, Goose, Gravy, ,Herring ,Kidney, Liver, Mackerel, Meat extracts, Mincemeat, Partridge, Roe, Sardines, Scallops, Sweetbreads, Yeast- as a supplement

Moderate Purine (EAT) Meat, Poultry, Meat, Shellfish, Asparagus, Dried beans, Lentils, Mushrooms, Dried peas, Spinach

Most of the protein in the therapeutic diet during acute bouts should come from cheese, milk, eggs and vegetables (low purine)

Cherries contain an enzyme that helps to break down and cause the excretion of uric acid. Eat one cup/day cherries every day to relieve the pain and ˝ cup daily to prevent future attacks. Look for fresh raw cherries first. Frozen or canned unsweetened cherries or 100% pure cherry juice may work too.
